- Read the job advert and the person specification thoroughly to understand the skills the employer is looking for.
- Research about the employer before you start filling in the form as you will be able to tailor the application and give stronger examples.
- Read the instructions carefully, some application forms require you to use black ink and capital letters.
- If you are filling in a paper copy, it's a good idea to have more copies of the form so you can have a draft if needed.
- Make sure you fill in all sections on the form including personal information, work history, education, references and any other information required.

When writing the supporting statement or answering competency based questions, give examples to further elaborate on your skills.Do not only write 'I can work under pressure'. Employers are looking for an example where you can describe a time you worked under pressure and achieved the task or target.
- At times, for supporting statements there may be word counts or requirement that you do not go over 2 to 3 pages of A4.
- Proofread for any spelling or grammar mistakes before submitting the form.

Fill in the contact details of your referees. Make sure you ask the referees before you put their details down.Usually one work related reference is required, if you do not have any work experience, you may be able to put other contacts from your education or volunteer roles.
- Keep a copy of the application form for future job applications and it will be useful to go through the form again if you are offered an interview.
