#RealPeople #RealLives – Robert
When Robert was 15 years old in 1961 he started work for the Dudley Herald Newspaper as a general ‘runner’ and, after being recognised for his hard work, he was quickly shown how to print and thoroughly enjoyed learning how to write.
After gaining three years’ experience in the print business Robert decided to move on and took up work at Ewarts Ltd in Dudley as a tool maker.
Robert still enjoys writing and reading and appreciates good quality paper – he’s able to tell different types of paper apart and advises everyone that “Basildon Bond is the best paper you can get!”
Family also means a lot to Robert and he’s constantly in touch with them over social media, regularly offering to do anything he can to help them.
He’s definitely living life to the full and relishes his many holidays where he enjoys learning about the different cultures, religions and meeting new people. In his more recent holidays Robert has been to; Turkey, Holland, Portugal and Morocco.
Now 74, Robert enjoys his active, independent life, giving back to the local community by taking part in several fundraising initiatives including walking an incredible 10,000 steps from Blackpool all the way to Lytham for Cancer research!
Our retirement living scheme in Dudley, where Robert now lives is the exact same building he went to work in at the age of 15 when it belonged to the Dudley Herald. Such an incredible twist of fate that is not lost on Robert, who tells us: “It was so good to come back here as it brings back all my good memories”.
